preparing for flooding and power outages. in new york city waves are splashing over the sea walls. here's t.j. winick live. >> reporter: good afternoon whether here on the southern tip of new jersey or 150 miles north up in new york city, we are expect to see water rise from 6 to 11 feet. it could have a devastating impact on the east coast. forcasters predict this could be the worst storm in two generations. hurricane sandy is strengthening and heading north. with 50 million in its path. the eye is expect to make landfall late monday night in atlantic city, new jersey but will.i.am pack communites hundreds of miles away. -- >> -- >> this is going to be a big storm, a difficult storm the great thing about america is we all pull together. >> reporter: the real fear is sandy's stor surge, fueled by high winds and a full moon. >> we are talking the ocean coming in causing massive

flooding. >> reporter: already a spectacle early monday in cape may, the angry atlantic is the real fear for locals like tom. >> i think it is mostly water. >> reporter: seen in satellite imagery the ominous system has grown to almost 1,000 miles wide. the federal govenment in d.c. has been shutdown. this morning the largest transit system in the country is not running. threats of massive flooding closed hundreds of miles of new york subways, trains and buses through tuesday morningeey affecting nine million commuters. >> do not underestimate this storm. these forecasts for the surge are really extraordinary. >> reporter: philadelphia, washington and new jersey's transit systems, all suspended. so is amtrak and nearly 7,000 flights from north carolina to boston, cancelled. >> it is not the airlines' fault you can't control the weather. just go with the flow.

>> reporter: offshore these already impressive waves have been measured at over 20 feet high. the real concern here on the jersey shore is the next high tide that is scheduled for after 7:30 this evening. t.j. winick, abc news. let's find out where hurricane sandy is now. meteorologist mike nicco is in the weather center. when do you expect the storm to make landfall? quicker than what people areying it has picked up speed winds are going to be sharp and kick up higher waves. here's live doppler out of delaware, you can see the eye wall starting to come into play from hurricane sandy. it is still a hurricane only 75 miles from atlantic city now moving almost 30 miles per hour, that gives it three hours before the eye wall will come ashore. look at this 80 foot piece of

boardwalk floating down the streets of atlantic city, that's how powerful the waves have been this is 540 miles to the west, look how tall almost 700 miles north and south, massive storm that continues to east at 28 miles per hour. it is going to sit in new england for the better part of this week. if you have plans, call ahead. >> we heard t.j. winick talking about thousands of flights cancelled that is causing a ripple effect for bay area travelers. kira klapper joins us from san francisco international with more. >> reporter: 150 flights through sfo are cancel now. it is only expected to get worse for bay area travelers as the week progresses and hurricane sandy strengthens. hurricane sandy is already making enemies. >> this was my first time flying. i feel like flying is horrible and i don't want to do it again. >> reporter: 18-year-old

rebecca's flight new jersey of yesterday from new jersey was delayed turning what should have been a six hour trip into 11 hours then missed her connection to burbank. >> most of us missed our flight because it got here at 11. >> reporter: 150 flights, 75 departures and 75 arrivals in and out of sfo cancelled, leaving thousands of customers stranded since the cancellations began yesterday. >> what we are seeing today is a full cancellation of essentially all flying to and from the major east coast cities. this includes washington, d.c. airports, new york airports and boston as well. >> reporter: passengers are urged to check before coming to the airport. some who were proactive are still arriving to hear the bad news. >> i shouldn't be in this line and i'm upset because i wasn't notified via e-mail or text. i'm missing the event i was supposed to be at today in new orleans and they said no >> reporter: while thousands

campaign. stay with abc7 news throughout the day for continuing coverage of the storm also updates on abc7news.com. turning to giants fever. it is running high in the bay area this morning after the team won its second world series title in three years last night. the players splashed one another with champagne in celebration after beating the tigers. here at home, some of the revelry took a destructive turn. amy hollyfield is live at at&t park. one tough cleanup job. >> reporter: a cleanup job and big job for the police we are getting the numbers now, 35 people were arrested last night are two of them had guns. today people are showing their love for the giants by spending money, buying anything that world series on it. last night people who celebrated some of them a bit more aggressively. the giants weren't here but the fans were. some of them got rowdy celebrating the world series.

they built a fire in the middle of the intersection of king and third and danced and celebrated around it, saying they just needed a place to party. some of the out of control fans stunned others when they flipped a car over and ripped off the doors. >> i was shocked. i couldn't believe that was happening. scary. it is supposed to be fun too bad there wasn't somewhere we could go. >> reporter: some in the crowd set a muni bus on fire. the bus had just come out of maintenance and was worth $700,000. muni says several other buses were also damaged. in the mission one man lit a firework and barely escaped serious injury when it went off in his hand after a few more bonfires and dumpster fire were lit and bottles and rocks were thrown at officers police decided to declare this party an unlawful assembly and

hurricane sandy is throwing the presidential candidates off course. katie marzullo join us from the newsroom with more. >> reporter: president obama said over an hour ago he's confident state and federal agencies are properly prepared for the storm. a lot of that prep means shutting things down and getting the of town. as rare as it was at the u.s. financial markets were closed today they are going to stay closed tomorrow this is the reason people are supposed to evacuate ahead of a hurricane the unpredictable ocean caught in north carolina a rogue wave knocked matt gutman and his producer off their feet. the crew of the hm bunny had to abandon ship. the coast guard has -- rescued cued 14 onboard, two are still missing. >> the two that remain unaccounted for made it off the vessel but did not make

suspicious warehouse fire under investigation in san jose. we have pictures showing huge flames shooting through the roof of this vacant building on almaden road. fire broke out before 4:00 this morning the warehouse housed gymnastics. investigators say it is the third major fire in san jose in the past 24 hours. gas praises still dropping fast, 26 cents in the last week -- according to aaa average price in california dropped by the biggest amount
